The risks to health and safety from playing digital video games are very small, but no activity can ever be completely risk-free. We have set out below certain health and safety information which may be relevant.
1. Risk of Photosensitive Epilepsy
If you have an epileptic condition or have had seizures, consult your doctor prior to using this video game.
Some individuals may be sensitive to flashing or flickering lights, or geometric shapes and patterns, and could have an undetected epileptic condition, even if they have never had a seizure before. If so, there is a risk of suffering an epileptic seizure when playing video games or watching video content.
Discontinue use immediately and consult your doctor if you experience any of the following health problems or symptoms when exposed to flashing or flickering lights or other light stimulation whilst playing video games or watching video content:
・eye soreness
・altered vision
・migraine
・muscle or eye twitching
・convulsion or other involuntary movements
・blackout
・loss of awareness
・disorientation.
In addition to the above, discontinue playing immediately if you experience any of the following symptoms:
・ headache
・ dizziness
・ nausea
・ fatigue
・ similar symptoms to motion sickness
・ discomfort or pain.
If the condition persists, seek medical attention.
2. Motion Sickness
There is a risk of motion sickness, nausea, disorientation, blurred vision or other discomfort whilst playing video games, particularly when viewing virtual reality content. If you experience any of these symptoms, stop playing the game immediately, and remove any VR headset or equivalent.
3. Gaming disorder
Gaming disorder is recognised as a diagnosable condition by the World Health Organisation, and can include preoccupation with gaming, giving up other activities as a result of gaming, or the feeling that there is a constant need to spend more time gaming. Be alert to potential symptoms of gaming disorder, and consider seeking medical advice if you believe you may have gaming disorder.
4. Online Safety
Take steps to stay safe when playing games online. These should include:
・ ensuring that you have a safe username
・ be careful about what information you share online
・ check your privacy settings and make sure those are appropriate
・ be aware of loot boxes or incentives to make in-app purchases
・ stay alert to cyberbullying, on-line harassment or inappropriate content, and report it
5. Safe Use of Video Game Hardware, including Game Controllers
Always read and take note of the health and safety warnings from the hardware manufacturer, and follow the manufacturer’s instructions for use of any video game controllers or other hardware.
Ensure any hardware is appropriate for the age of the user. A responsible adult should explain the requirements for safe use of any video game hardware to any young children before they use that hardware, and a responsible adult should oversee any young child’s use of that hardware throughout its use.
Use any controller or other hardware in a well-lit environment and keep a safe distance from any TV or other screen, other people, pets or obstacles
Avoid prolonged use of the product. It is recommended that video game players take 15 minute breaks for every hour of play.
Discontinue playing the game if you feel tired or drowsy.
Vibration function (where applicable)
Do not use any device’s vibration function if you use pacemakers, defibrillators, programmable shunt valves, or other medical devices.
Do not use any device’s vibration function if you have any injury or impairment that may be affected by this vibration function. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions to switch off any vibration function when appropriate.
